Hitachi statistics techniques (HDS) and HP added business-classification SAN arrays today based on know-how from OEM companion Hitachi Ltd.
In introducing its virtual Storage Platform (VSP), the successor to its standard Storage Platform (USP) V, HDS put the emphasis on “3D scaling,” which refers to the means to scale up (performance, ability and connectivity), scale out (distinct methods in a single logical gadget) and scale deep (by means of virtualization of heterogeneous substances).
HDS officers also emphasised the gadget’s web page-stage Dynamic Tiering, where a web page is now defined as a extra granular 42MB stripe measurement. facts can be instantly placed on tier 0 (SSD flash drives), tier 1 (SAS drives) or tier 2 (SATA) in keeping with person-described guidelines and the frequency of records entry. all of the pressure forms are available in a 2.5-inch kind ingredient, which gives power and cooling merits vs. older arrays with three.5-inch drives.
Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning (HDP), or thin provisioning, is also now in line with 42MB page sizes and a knowledge dispersion methodology.
“With Dynamic Provisioning, there isn't any thought of physicality linked to a LUN,” says Claus Mikkelsen, HDS’ chief scientist, “and there’s no approach that you would be able to manually provision a LUN that could outperform what we can do with HDP.”
Versus the old era USP V, the VSP gives:
--140% greater efficiency (237,000 IOPS vs. one hundred,000 IOPS assuming a 60-40 read-write ratio and 8KB blocks)
--87% extra IOPS per square foot (5,545 vs. 2,970)
--78% extra drives (2,048 2.5-inch drives vs. 1,152 3.5-inch drives)
--71% greater connectivity (192 8Gbps Fibre Channel ports vs. 112 ports on the USP V)
--forty% much less vigour consumption (expressed in kVA per TB)
--40% higher density
--eighty% more bandwidth
The VSP will also be configured in a midrange rack with eight processor cores, sixteen 8Gbps Fibre Channel host ports and 64GB of global cache, and can be scaled up to 128 processor cores, 192 Fibre Channel ports, 1,024GB of world cache, and a couple of,048 6Gbps SAS drives.
HDS’ VSP helps all information varieties (e.g., block, file and content material).
HDS also introduced the Hitachi Command Suite 7.0 management application, with the capacity to manage more than 5 million logical objects and 255PB of virtualized capacity from a single screen. The enterprise claims that, compared to its previous management utility, Hitachi Command Suite requires 50% fewer administration steps and makes it possible for a ability utilization increase of up to 50%. additionally, provisioning storage takes best six clicks, in line with Mikkelsen.
HP introduced the StorageWorks P9500 array nowadays, which is in keeping with practically the same Hitachi Ltd. platform as HDS’ VSP. HP’s nomenclature could cause some initial confusion because the P9500 is the highest-end member of what has been historically said because the XP collection of arrays.
“We’re in the process of rationalizing our product [nomenclature],” says Lee Johns, director of advertising in HP’s StorageWorks division.
HP known as consideration to the undeniable fact that the P9500 makes use of average 19-inch racks, as adversarial to the larger racks used in outdated technology XP techniques. clients can scale to 2,048 drives in six regular racks via 2.5-inch SSD, SAS or SATA drives.
With the introduction of the P9500, HP brought two new utility applications – the P9000 software performance Extender (APEX) and P9000 sensible Tiers.
sensible Tiers is in response to Hitachi Ltd. expertise and makes it possible for automatic, sub-LUN tiering across drive forms (e.g., SSD, 7,200rpm SAS and 15,000rpm SAS) to manage QoS. statistics is migrated on the web page level, as hostile to the LUN level, to probably the most applicable tiers of storage.
Developed in-apartment by HP, APEX utility allows dynamic project of purposes to the most acceptable materials in the SAN array to optimize bandwidth, latency and response time necessities, according to Johns. APEX works handiest with HP-UX purposes.
in addition, HP brought a brand new utility licensing mannequin it really is a metered, pay-as-you-use licensing scheme, as antagonistic to the average perpetual licensing mannequin.
Key specs of the P9500, which is positioned as a part of HP’s Converged Infrastructure initiative, include as much as 2,048 drives for uncooked ability of 1.2PB and usable capability of 1PB, which is scalable as much as 247PB of exterior means. The disk array will also be configured with up to 128 host ports (8Gbps Fibre Channel or 4Gbps/8Gbps FICON) and a maximum of 512GB of cache.

--78% more drives (2,048 2.5-inch drives vs. 1,152 3.5-inch drives)
--71% more connectivity (192 8Gbps Fibre Channel ports vs. 112 ports on the USP V)
--40% less power consumption (expressed in kVA per TB)
--40% higher density
--80% more bandwidth
The VSP can be configured in a midrange rack with eight processor cores, 16 8Gbps Fibre Channel host ports and 64GB of global cache, and can be scaled up to 128 processor cores, 192 Fibre Channel ports, 1,024GB of global cache, and 2,048 6Gbps SAS drives.
HDS’ VSP supports all data types (e.g., block, file and content).
HDS also introduced the Hitachi Command Suite 7.0 management software, with the ability to manage more than five million logical objects and 255PB of virtualized capacity from a single screen. The company claims that, compared to its previous management software, Hitachi Command Suite requires 50% fewer management steps and enables a capacity utilization increase of up to 50%. In addition, provisioning storage takes only six clicks, according to Mikkelsen.
HP introduced the StorageWorks P9500 array today, which is based on essentially the same Hitachi Ltd. platform as HDS’ VSP. HP’s nomenclature may cause some initial confusion because the P9500 is the highest-end member of what has been traditionally referred to as the XP Series of arrays.
“We’re in the process of rationalizing our product [nomenclature],” says Lee Johns, director of marketing in HP’s StorageWorks division.
HP called attention to the fact that the P9500 uses standard 19-inch racks, as opposed to the larger racks used in previous generation XP systems. Users can scale to 2,048 drives in six standard racks via 2.5-inch SSD, SAS or SATA drives.
With the introduction of the P9500, HP introduced two new software packages – the P9000 Application Performance Extender (APEX) and P9000 Smart Tiers.
Smart Tiers is based on Hitachi Ltd. technology and enables automated, sub-LUN tiering across drive types (e.g., SSD, 7,200rpm SAS and 15,000rpm SAS) to manage QoS. Data is migrated at the page level, as opposed to the LUN level, to the most appropriate tiers of storage.
Developed in-house by HP, APEX software enables dynamic assignment of applications to the most appropriate resources in the SAN array to optimize bandwidth, latency and response time requirements, according to Johns. APEX works only with HP-UX applications.
In addition, HP introduced a new software licensing model that is a metered, pay-as-you-use licensing scheme, as opposed to the traditional perpetual licensing model.
Key specs of the P9500, which is positioned as part of HP’s Converged Infrastructure initiative, include up to 2,048 drives for raw capacity of 1.2PB and usable capacity of 1PB, which is scalable up to 247PB of external capacity. The disk array can be configured with up to 128 host ports (8Gbps Fibre Channel or 4Gbps/8Gbps FICON) and a maximum of 512GB of cache.
Pricing for the P9500 starts at $250,000.
Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) has relaxed its pricing on external storage software licenses for the newest high-end array the USP-V, along with its rebranded version from Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP), the XP24000, according to users and officials from HP. Users will no longer have to pay the same licensing fees for software on external storage, and capacity-based pricing has also been lowered for smaller configurations.
"The competitive advantage we had as a result of [selling] external storage [with the XP] was moderated somewhat by high price and all the extra stuff users had to add on," according to Dwayne Gray, an HP product manager for XP who oversees software licensing for the array. "We got good feedback from the field that that wasn't such a good thing, and Hitachi listened."
Ed Kosten, supervisor of Unix systems engineering for Priority Health, is currently in the process of installing one of the new XP24000s and said the new licensing will allow him to attach HP EVA arrays for external storage at one third the cost of the XP12000. "Before, even if we bought a cheap [HP] MSA and wanted it to be presented to the XP, it would be as much as if we'd just bought more disk for the XP itself with the licensing that was involved."
Now, Kosten said, the new licensing will allow him to attach an EVA array, allocate 3 terabytes (TB) of its cheaper storage for testing a production Oracle database and replicate the data to it using HP's Business Copy. "Previously it would've required us to restore the data to a test server from tape. Now that we can afford to attach the EVA, we've gone to testing in minutes instead of hours or days."
According to HP's Gray, the change in pricing comes first and foremost from an across-the-board lowering of license fees for external capacity. Gray declined to give specific numbers, but said the pricing for usable capacity-based licensing on external storage is now 10% to 20% of the cost of raw capacity licensing on internal storage, depending on a user's capacity. Previously, both were licensed equally according to raw capacity. This is applicable to both the HDS and HP models of the array, Gray said.
The overall pricing structures for both internal and external storage have also been changed from capacity licensing "tiers" to pricing "bands," which cuts down on the number of licenses users need to purchase. Previously, the tiered structure required users to "build" capacity licenses according to tiers of zero-1 TB, 2-6 TB, 7-15 TB, 16-31 TB and 32-63 TB. "So, if you had 63 TB you couldn't just buy 63 TB, you had to buy one of the zero-[1 TB license], five of the 2-6 TB, nine of the 7-15 TB and so on. You'd end up with a purchase order with five line items for the same software," Gray said.
Now, users can purchase capacity licenses within pricing "bands" rather than having to build up the licenses, so the 63 TB example would require two licenses within the 32-63 TB band rather than five.
Also changed with the new version of both arrays is the number of software licenses required for external storage. For example, an application called AutoLUN, which automatically load balances data within RAID groups on the array to optimize performance, used to be required for both internal and external storage. "That was a perfect example of the licensing issues," Kosten said. "Because those external arrays have their own way of masking LUNs and RAID groups, AutoLUN didn't work with them anyway."
HDS software changes
Specific software titles are bundled differently between HP and HDS with the new systems, but both have tried to streamline what previously had been separate line items into bundles requiring a single license key. "Hitachi Data Systems' goal was to price the new software bundles below the cost of the individual products if purchased separately," said a company spokesperson in an email to SearchStorage.com.
New bundles on the USP-V include a package called Hitachi Basic Operating System (BOS) software, which includes Hitachi Device Manager, all Hitachi Resource Manager software components, Hitachi Server Priority Manager and Hitachi Virtual Partition Manager with support for up to four storage partitions. Licensing is based on internal raw capacity only. Volume management and partition management for more than four partitions comes with a separate bundle called Basic Operating System V, which is licensed by the attached external storage usable capacity.
There are also three new replication bundles: Hitachi's Disaster Recovery, which combines TrueCopy Synchronous replication and Universal Replicator for two data centers; Disaster Recovery Extended, which includes support for up to three data centers; and Hitachi In-System Heterogeneous Replication, which consists of ShadowImage Heterogeneous Replication and Copy-On-Write software.
HP software changes
The XP24000 comes with HP StorageWorks XP Array Manager software, which shares much of its code with HDS's HiCommand software. According to Gray, HP has made some changes to licensing within that software, as well. One software title, called Tiered Storage Manager, which migrates data between tiers while applications are live, has lower pricing in capacity bands below 126 TB. HP has also bundled AutoLUN, a LUN configuration security manager and cache partitioning software into Array Manager, rather than requiring separate licenses for each. The new Array Manager now includes command-line interface (CLI) and SMI-S features that previously had to be purchased with HP's CommandView array management software.
There is one caveat to the pricing changes for HP users, however, according to Gray. The old LUN configuration software was more expensive across the board than the new array manager and pricing has also been lowered across the board for HP's CommandView SRM tool. But otherwise, pricing for specific software titles vary, particularly when it comes to large configurations. "Around 80 TB and below, the new pricing is less than the old pricing, but at 80 TB and above, the new pricing is more," Gray said. "It's a tradeoff we made to make it easier for low-end guys to get in, and high-end customers always negotiate list prices down."
HP has announced five new services for optimizing and managing heterogeneous storage environments, along with enhancements to the company's Pay per Use solution for HP StorageWorks XP disk arrays, which allows customers to pay based on actual storage capacity usage.
The new network storage services include HP Data Replication Solution, HP Disaster Tolerant Management, HP Storage Optimization Assessment, HP Data Sanitization, and HP Storage Area Management Solution.
"HP sees storage-related services as a key growth area in their overall services effort," says Doug Chandler, program director for Storage and Data Management Services at IDC. "Compaq had a pretty solid story to tell in this space before the merger, so that's something that HP picked up as part of the merger. Customers are looking to get the most out of the storage capacity they've already installed, so that's the focus of most of these services. And the data management and retention issue has become a hot one, due to the headlines about e-mail coming into play in several high-profile court cases, as well as regulations that specify how data, including e-mail, must be retained."
"These offerings help to round out HP's storage services portfolio," Chandler continues. "Nothing groundbreaking here, but these services address some key customer concerns pertaining to storage," such as business recovery and continuity, storage optimization, data management for e-mail archiving, and sanitization. The e-mail archiving service, relating to Legato software, was announced earlier in the month.
"Increasing agility and return on IT investment will continue to be critical business imperatives moving forward," states Gary Wright, vice president, network storage services, HP Services. "HP, with its Adaptive Enterprise Strategy, is strongly positioned to help companies create more business value with services such as these."
Storage has become "the heart of IT," adds Wright, "because it is very critical to IT infrastructure and the whole business."
Issues like return on investment, managing multi-vendor environments, and disaster recovery are driving the need for better storage management tools, according to Wright. And with more than 2,000 SANs implemented -- "more than anyone else" -- Wright says HP is positioned to deliver those services.
Wright claims companies using the new HP services report they have improved performance, for example, by 30%; reduced the need for storage administrators by more than 75%; and increased SLA delivery by 100%.
Page 2: The New HP Services
Data Replication Solution Service
The HP Data Replication Solution Service lets customers manage and control data replication by implementing a customized, integrated, and operational data replication solution using HP Continuous Access and Business Copy technologies.
With the service, customers receive an accelerated return on IT investment and benefit from a simplified solution that can be scaled up or down based on business needs, according to HP. The service delivers enhanced availability and disaster recovery protection, and better aligns business with IT.
The service costs $10,000-$60,000, depending on complexity.
Disaster Tolerant Management Service
The HP Disaster Tolerant Management Service helps customers improve the effectiveness of their data center disaster tolerant strategy by reducing downtime and stabilizing recovery processes.
HP says the completely customized service is unique in that it extends across the entire IT environment -- encompassing facilities, storage, servers, networks, and application management -- to address the entire disaster tolerant infrastructure, speed recovery times, and simplify day-to-day operations.
The service helps customers implement effective recovery solutions based on the HP StorageWorks Continuous Access Enterprise Virtual Array, a controller-based application that performs real-time data replication between arrays.
HP Storage Optimization Assessment Service
The HP Storage Optimization Assessment Service provides "expert storage capacity and performance analyses," optimization recommendations, and planning assistance to improve return on investment.
Customers are given solution recommendations to increase data availability, storage efficiency, utilization levels, and network storage performance, while decreasing wasted capacity and bandwidth.
The service costs $20,000 for 10 servers and scales from there.
HP Data Sanitization Service
The HP Data Sanitization Service is designed to eliminate the possibility that sensitive data can be retrieved or reconstructed from de-commissioned storage devices. It addresses this potentially serious yet often overlooked security risk by removing confidential data from hardware after system upgrades, consolidations, and storage platform migrations.
HP says it is the only vendor that currently provides data sanitization as a standard service offering. HP Data Sanitization Service is available for UNIX and Windows-based computing platforms using HP StorageWorks disk-based storage devices, starting at $7,000 per terabyte.
HP Storage Area Management Solution Service
HP says the Storage Area Management Solution Service lets companies have better control of their increasingly complex storage environments while increasing scalability, availability, and flexibility. It does this by providing expert project management, design activities, environmental analysis, and business process and reporting needs analyses.
HP Services storage consultants leverage their in-depth knowledge of the HP OpenView Storage Area Manager -- an integrated suite of storage area network management software products that support HP and non-HP storage devices -- to deliver a tailored solution for each customer.
The service ranges from $10,000 to $100,000.
Pay per Use Solution for HP StorageWorks XP Disk Arrays
HP's Pay per Use solution on HP StorageWorks XP 128 and 1024 disk arrays lets customers pay a fixed monthly fee plus a variable fee that is based on metering the actual usage of their disk storage systems.
Updates to the solution include a refined pricing model and enhanced metering methodology. Designed to scale right along with a company's IT environment, HP says the solution takes the guesswork out of forecasting anticipated storage needs, aligns costs with storage usage, and eliminates large up-front storage investments.
The Pay per Use solution for StorageWorks XP is an offering in HP's On Demand solutions portfolio and is delivered through HP Financial Services. HP claims it was the first company to introduce a pay-per-use selling model.
The base payment is 75% of the reference lease price and is capped.
