How tons of a corporation’s event toward sustainability is driven by way of the very own passions of its CEO? according to the conversations Barron’s had lately with several corporate chieftains, reasonably plenty. That’s some of the insights from our second annual sustainability rating of public companies.
consider Voya monetary (ticker: VOYA), the insurer and retirement-rate reductions company that vaulted to No. 6 this 12 months from No. 46 final 12 months. Even before Voya separated from Dutch guardian ING and went public in 2013, its CEO turned into already planning whatever thing relatively radical: variety in its administration ranks and gender parity on the board. “We very consciously desired to ship a message that diversity and inclusion had been very excessive on our checklist,” Rod Martin, Voya’s chief govt, advised Barron’s. To Martin, it become the correct thing to do—“there’s so lots evidence that agencies which have performed this operate superior.” through 2018, Voya had different its board; half of the govt committee contributors have been women, and the stock had beaten the S&P 500 index twofold.
Or agree with Hubert Joly of No. 1–ranked premier purchase (BBY). He dates his sustainability dedication to when he changed into a toddler in France and noticed the environmental hurt being executed to the Alps. He traces it via early maturity as he developed a spiritual follow, and then to an encounter with a sophisticated client when he was a young McKinsey consultant.
For traders, it has paid off. In a troublesome 2018, through which the S&P 500 lost four.2% and the Russell 1000 fell four.6%, the a hundred most sustainable groups on our record lost 3.2%. Calvert research and administration, the sustainability powerhouse owned by Eaton Vance (EV), compiled Barron’s listing, basing the rankings on lots of of metrics that address environmental, social, and company governance, or ESG, elements. “We’re beginning to get further and further cognizance from the markets,” says Calvert CEO John Streur. “companies can also be differentiated in response to how well they manage their environmental and social influence, and the power of their governance. The list shows who’s developing a far better company, long term, for long-term buyers.”
particular report: The one hundred Most Sustainable businesses
There are large changes within the excellent 10 from remaining year, including the entry of Voya, and choicest purchase’s ascent to No. 1 from third final 12 months. You might word that one of the most properly corporations are headquartered in California. That makes sense: The state is home to complicated environmental laws and governance initiatives. “that you may’t say it’s causal, but it’s explanatory,” Streur says.
To create the rankings, Calvert analyzed the 1,000 greatest publicly held U.S. businesses (by way of stock market value) and scored them on greater than 200 key symptoms and 28 considerations. Calvert then sorted the statistics into 5 key categories: shareholders, employees, consumers, planet, and community. (The shareholders class could consist of govt compensation, for example, and the purchasers category may consist of records safety or product defense.) every service provider received a ranking from zero to a hundred in each class.
eventually, Calvert produced a single rating for all of the businesses, weighted based on how fabric each category is for their trade: Emissions are less vital for a bank’s rating than they are for a trucking company’s, for example. It additionally excluded companies that didn’t meet the Calvert ideas for in charge funding.

throughout the U.S., sustainability has turn into a priority in lots of areas. This yr, California’s new law mandating that companies based there have at least one woman board member takes effect. other states, akin to New Jersey, are in view that an identical legislations, on the conception that different boards perform better and are less vulnerable to groupthink. Institutional Shareholder features predicts that the number of all-male boards, now at an all-time low, will continue to decline. Boards, as soon as somnolent, are being asked to address a whole lot of dangers, comparable to those from local weather change, or other ESG considerations and behavior that may impact corporate efficiency. know-how organizations, for example, are increasingly scrutinized over their protection of person records. The pressure isn’t coming simply from innovative states: much of it's being driven by knowledgeable money managers, who're including ESG components to their investment ideas.

You should 1) have a superb group, 2) have chuffed clients, and 3) generate returns. but it’s the first priority that generates the 2nd, which generates the third. Making cash is the outcome.”

It begins with the intention of the enterprise—not to make cash, however to make contributions to the common good, and, above all, to enhance lives via know-how by using addressing key human wants—and never burning the place to make a profit.”

HP Revamps Its companion program
by using Jeffrey Schwartz
September 30, 2010
so as to incent answer providers to sell extra items in its general portfolio, Hewlett-Packard is revamping its companion program.
The streamlining of HP's flagship partner application, referred to as PartnerOne, become announced Wednesday and takes effect Nov. 1 in live performance with the beginning of the company's new fiscal yr.
while HP typically makes use of the event of its new fiscal yr to replace PartnerOne, the latest round displays its most massive alterations and streamlining in 4 years, based on enterprise officers.
The alterations are additionally meant to bring dozens of acquired groups over the past a few years into the PartnerOne fold. "or not it's an overhaul for us," pointed out Mike Galane, senior director of HP's enterprise Server, Storage and Networking (ESSN) Channel marketing and strategy for the Americas.
HP has made four key updates to PartnerOne, namely advancements to the deal registration procedure, an alignment of the membership structures, a streamlining of its Elite designation throughout key product areas and expanded investments in advertising and working towards.
On the deal registration front, HP has standardized terms and techniques. Now partners simplest have 5 deal registration options, down from 11, aimed at expediting the basic turnaround method. also, where new offers are involved, HP is moving from a rebate mannequin to upfront payments, Galane mentioned.
"this manner or not it's real clear within the deal," he referred to. "And it be a cash cycle for our companions as they shut the deal, they see the benefit upfront as smartly because the sales reps get to look what the margin is in the deal. once in a while it's not obtrusive with again-end merits."
Romi Randhawa, CEO of HPM Networks, an HP partner based mostly in Freemont, Calif. welcomed the alterations to the deal registration method. "My reps will love it, and we do not need to chase the rebates anymore," he noted, in an e-mail.
The deal registration system is also aimed toward bringing collectively the entire HP portfolio, Galane introduced. "if you happen to agree with HP has to promote everything from PalmTops to NonStops, or not it's a true challenge for us, given the range of the portfolio, and lots of those challenges have been seen to our companions during the past," he spoke of.
one other key exchange to the PartnerOne program involves bringing some key product areas into the program. Now part of PartnerOne is its whole combined networking enterprise that includes the ProCurve networking product lines and the 3Com companion program. also added into PartnerOne are HP's utility enterprise, Palm and its Halo telepresence/videoconferencing line.
"The bottom line is that on account of all this, companions can be a good deal greater efficient in how they contend with ParterOne," Galane noted. "The classes are certainly constant across product traces, which encompass imaging, very own methods and our business company, and there's an enhanced rebate structure."
New Elite Designations
HP has added general Elite designations across its portfolio that are aimed at consistency. The enterprise has extended the year-ancient Converged Infrastructure Elite program for those companions that dangle virtualization, networking, functions and business storage Elite designations. "These are the individuals who can really sell on the records middle level, really do statistics center level transitions for our partners," Galane talked about.
HP is including incremental rebates to companions that hold all of these designations under Converged Infrastructure. while Galane stated the quantities will fluctuate depending on the associate's business with HP, on normal rebates could be around 4 to 7 percent.
beneath Virtualization Elite, HP is incorporating the previous thin customer Elite designation to cowl the gamut of computing device and server virtualization hardware and software.
HP has also added application and printing options Elite designations. The latter is aimed toward assisting partners transition from promoting traditional printing products to providing managed print services, pointed out Matt Smith, director of advertising for HP's solution issuer corporation.
"The quantity of managed print service undertaking in the market is starting to be very promptly," Smith spoke of. "With that, partners have asked for a lot more practicing assistance on that aspect and schooling to get them ramped up. we will adjust that so as to add managed print features as a huge part, boost the working towards and doing a rise in lots of the incentives for longer term contracts as opposed to aspect deal, and loads of the alternative [or] upgrading of one of the most growing older fleets."
more MDF Coming
finally, HP is adding more advertising and building funds in its new fiscal 12 months, Smith spoke of. HP and Dell retail outlets that use VDI continue to get better virtual computer hardware options because the two opponents race to carry the subsequent smartest thing.
This week, throughout the Citrix Synergy 2012 convention in San Francisco, Hewlett-Packard introduced a brand new zero customer and Dell introduced yet another virtual computing device infrastructure (VDI) component to its desktop Virtualization options (DVS) system. Wyse expertise Inc., now owned by Dell, also delivered a new zero customer, Wyse Xenith 2, on Wednesday.
competitors between HP and Dell heated up when Dell bought Wyse, HP's main skinny customer competitor, in April.
For now, Wyse continues to function as a separate entity. once the acquisition is finalized, Dell should integrate Wyse devices and software with its own products, the manner HP integrated Neoware Inc.'s shoppers after it got the business 5 years ago.
[HP and Dell] appear to leapfrog one an extra all of the time.
Dennis Hood,TTU systems assist supervisor
"HP has been speakme the speak for a while, and it will take Dell and Wyse a while to integrate," said Bob O'Donnell, a client machine analyst with IDC Corp., an analyst firm primarily based in Framingham, Mass.
For HP, the Dell-Wyse transition duration skill the opportunity of recent enterprise.
"we're going to try to capitalize on any disruptions that the acquisitions could cause," pointed out Jeff Groudan, HP's director of thin valued clientele.
meanwhile, getting customers to put money into zero customers in the first region is the big challenge for Dell and HP; zero client and thin client adoption follows VDI adoption, which has most effective a small market, O'Donnell observed.
"There are a lot of infrastructure investments required and expertise, and that's the reason the stopgap," O'Donnell said. Plus, HP and Dell "are attempting to promote [thin clients] in opposition t the de-facto normal of PCs -- and now we now have issues like iPad coming into the scenario."
however, both HP and Dell have a large customer base, with the intention to certainly win the choose of VDI stores that already use their hardware, he stated.
Dell's VDI play: Simplicity
Dell's digital desktop play is all about making VDI easy through pre-integrating methods.
as a substitute of having to cobble the entire items of VDI together themselves, customers can purchase a pre-constructed Dell DVS bundle and manage the whole atmosphere -- including the servers, storage and application -- collectively.
With this approach, there's one factor of contact for guide if some thing goes wrong, the company pointed out.
Dell up to date DVS business this week through including Unidesk Corp.'s application into the mix. Unidesk presents laptop provisioning and management utility for Citrix methods Inc. XenDesktop or VMware Inc. View environments. Pricing for the DVS system changed into now not made attainable.
The application truly breaks up windows into core accessories -- or layers -- to let IT build customized desktops and carry departmental applications. this way, it could build one golden image to manipulate all of a company's pcs and departmental applications.
Tennessee Tech tuition (TTU) in Cookeville, Tenn. makes use of Unidesk to manipulate 900 digital pcs in line with VMware View.
"With View, we are able to manage [desktops in the computer] lab, however with Unidesk we are able to control the functions," mentioned Dennis Hood, TTU's methods help supervisor. "If we wish to update an app, we will not have to be troubled about updating 10 distinctive templates; it simplifies management."
The tuition makes use of Dell hardware together with FX100 zero customers and OptiFlex FX130 skinny consumers for VDI, along with Dell EqualLogic storage and Dell servers. The IT group continues to be loyal to Dell, despite some good experiences for Hood with HP in the past.
"They (Dell) are responsive when we've an issue, provide us awesome pricing and products and they ship materials straight away," Hood referred to.
"[HP and Dell] seem to leapfrog one an additional all the time," he noted. "When one isn't doing anything smartly, the other is."
HP's new skinny customers
HP's strategy within the virtual computing device market is to be the first to introduce the next surest client gadget.
In October, HP claimed to be the first to bring a 0 customer that supports each USB and Ethernet connections. This week, it be a low-vigor (13-watt) HP t410 All-in-One sensible Zero customer it really is the primary customer to take potential of power over Ethernet (PoE).
The advantages of PoE are energy reduction and value rate reductions, and the benefit of a nil client is that it has no relocating ingredients to manipulate, HP mentioned.
the new all-in-one zero client is "a culmination of developments," O'Donnell noted. "or not it's a press release product that some individuals will locate beautiful -- if they are because zero customers."
The HP t410 AiO supports Citrix's HDX equipment-on-chip for top definition digital desktops. It additionally contains an ARM processor and integrated Digital Signage Processor to screen full-monitor excessive-definition (HD) video with respectable performance.
In a VMware View environment, the gadgets may also be reprogrammed to help PCoIP, based on HP.
The HP t410 AiO wise Zero client is anticipated to be attainable this summer. Pricing for the t410 All-in-One sensible Zero customer can be $429.

3 ways to make virtualization work
USDA agency consolidates far-flung servers via virtualization
Agency: Agricultural Marketing Services' (AMS) Information Technology Service at the Agriculture Department.
Challenge: Reduce 255 servers to 22 in two centralized data centers. Many of the servers are spread across various program areas.
Solution: Capacity planning, disaster recovery, network and storage assessment tools.
The Agriculture Department’s AMS has been on a mission for a little more than two years to bring down the number of servers under its jurisdiction from 255 to 22.
USDA senior management issued a memo in 2007 that states that all servers had to be placed in a centralized data center, said Jaime Canales, senior network infrastructure architect on the Enterprise Infrastructure Team at AMS' Information Technology Service.
AMS handles work from USDA divisions for dairy, fruit and vegetable, livestock and seed, poultry, and cotton and tobacco. Each division has its own servers.
AMS must centralize all of those servers into the ITS data center in Washington, D.C., and replicate them at AMS’ data center in Denver.
In 2007, Canales’ team used a capacity planning tool to evaluate how many servers could be virtualized — and found that almost every machine could be virtualized. They started with 35 servers in the ITS’ security zone or demilitarized zone.
AMS’ IT team divided those 255 servers in three phases. The department deployed that strategy using VMware’s ESXserver virtualization technology.
The first phase involved the virtualization of about 35 servers in security or demilitarized zones. Those servers were virtualized into four HP 580 servers. The HP ProLiant DL580 servers and Insight software make it easy to deploy, manage, and migrate virtualized servers with VMware, officials said.
Phase 1 was finished in early 2009. Next, AMS' IT team moved to replicate only the critical servers in that zone to the Denver data center. AMS used HP’s Continued Access to replicates its storage-area network from Washington to Denver and vice versa.
The second phase of the virtualization program involves infrastructure servers, such as Microsoft Exchange and SQL Server databases, in Washington, about 120 servers total. Phase 3 will focus on everything else throughout AMS.
Coming up with the money has been a challenge. AMS had a budget for Phase 1. Although the project grew in scope, the IT team managed to complete the phase, Canales said.
The biggest challenge that AMS faces will be migrating servers from the various regional program offices to the data centers in Washington and Denver. People are anxious about losing servers at their sites, so Canales must assure them that they will have access to their applications via remote connections, such as terminal service sessions.
Another challenge will be backup operations. “I don’t want to be running backup on files for a server in Fresno,” he said. Although the servers will reside in data centers in Washington and Denver, each division's systems administrator will back up the division's files.
Canales’ team is considering Symantec’s Netbackup recovery tool as a technical solution to the backup conundrum, he said.
Chargeback will be another problem, as each USDA division migrates to the virtual environment. Both HP and VMware offer chargeback products that Canales is evaluating.
To lead an effective virtualization move, IT managers need a good capacity planning tool to gauge overall server use. They also need to figure out what applications and servers can be virtualized. Next, they need a storage assessment tool to determine backup needs. And they also must evaluate network and disaster recovery assessment tools, he said.
AMS has completed a network assessment for Phase 1. But the IT team will need to do another round of assessments when moving servers from the program areas to the central data center.
For instance, if a server in Manassas, Va., has a 100 megabits/sec connection, it might need a 1 gigabit/sec connection to move from a physical to virtual server to facilitate faster replication of data to VMware on the virtual side, Canales said.
Canales plugged away on Phase 1 with only one other team member. They will receive backup on the project's next phases with the addition of two more team members.

Remember IGEL Technology? A decade ago, the thin client company was an industry darling that sold nice-looking client devices along with smart card authentication and a conversion kit to change abandoned IBM thin clients into IGEL thin clients.
Around that same time, the market became flooded with other thin client vendors, many of which have either gone out of business or have been absorbed by bigger companies. Use Archive.org's WayBack Machine to look at old iForum websites -- it's a who's who of companies that are gone.
I assumed IGEL was lost in that mix. So, when someone from the company approached me at Citrix Synergy last year, after 10 years of not hearing anything from them, I suspected that it was IGEL in name only. As it turns out, it never actually went away.
Germany-based IGEL re-established a presence in the United States over the past few years by opening a U.S. headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio. I recently got my hands on one of its thin clients and through a guided demo, I got a look at what today's IGEL thin clients are about.
The short explanation is that IGEL wants to support everyone, and I think they do a pretty good job of that. The model I received for testing, the UD3-730 LX, runs IGEL Linux and has clients for every major desktop virtualization solution, including:
VMware View (PC-over-IP or RDP)
Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop (HDX/ICA)
Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization for Desktops (SPICE)
Virtual Bridges VERDE (SPICE or RDP)
Ericom PowerTerm WebConnect (RDP)
Quest vWorkspace (EOP or RDP)
I can't think of anyone that's not covered by this list, because even the fringe solutions like Jetro COCKPIT use standard protocols. HOBlink is also one of those fringe offerings, but that company makes its money on a java-based RDP client.
The breadth of protocols supported is one thing, but I like the massive amount of configurations that IGEL exposes to the administrators. Either directly on the device or via the Universal Management Suite, you can configure everything from desktop virtualization protocols, terminal emulation packages and printers to network interface settings, mapped drives and custom firmware. The list of configurable items can actually be a bit daunting, but I've never met an admin who wished he or she had fewer options to choose from.
From a user perspective, the clients have a Linux feel to them, which some users and admins won't like. Like other Linux-based thin clients, though, it can be configured to auto-connect to a session and skip the Linux-looking launcher. The overall experience feels pretty good if you have to use it. The users aren't aware that so many options lie under the hood.
Like others in the space, IGEL has a desktop conversion tool called Universal Desktop Converter. As you'd expect, it converts a PC into a thin client that is managed via the same management utility that manages the actual thin clients. This is useful if you have old hardware that hasn't reached the end of its lifecycle, and it allows you to save on hardware, while still getting some of the management gains and flexibility of a thin client environment.
IGEL thin clients aren't limited to IGEL Linux, but you can tell the company is proud of the open source OS. Naturally, it also offers embedded Windows products. The terminal I have, for instance, can also run WES 2009 (the XP-based software) or WES 7 (the Windows 7software).
In order to compete with HP and Wyse, companies like IGEL, 10zig, ChipPC have to put out something unique. While it may not be for everyone, I think IGEL is doing its part again to keep its name in the discussion.
