HP OpenVMS Network Administration
Can HP's Converged Infrastructure Be All issues to All agencies?
With its new Converged Infrastructure pitch, HP wants to be all things to all organizations. How is it distinctive from Adaptive business, HP's old application?
by way of Stephen Swoyer
With its new Converged Infrastructure (CI) pitch, Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) is making it clear: it wants to be all things to all agencies.
want an excellent-dense, always-on facts middle that gives you a method to right away add -- or (simply as at once) pare returned -- compute, storage, or networking capacity? HP has a provider for that. are looking to reduce information middle energy charges, reduce administration charges, and enhance complete charge of ownership (TCO)? HP has a carrier for that, too.
If some aspects of CI don't forget what HP become touting 5 years ago as its Utility records middle (UDC), there is a explanation for that, says Jim Ganthier, vp of marketing for HP's trade commonplace Server community. What used to be referred to as utility computing is, in fact, a logical subset of CI.
feel of it in phrases that a digital client might understand: utility computing (and HP's UDC vision, in specific) is the video-on-demand component of CI's over-arching cable or broadband tv provider.
"Utility computing," Ganthier explains, "is a usage model."
for this reason, he concedes, lots of the identical advantages that are said to attach to utility computing -- e.g., greater effectivity; more desirable (if no longer highest quality) utilization of compute, storage, and community components; resiliency and elasticity, mainly through virtue of an means to improve extra right away from carrier interruptions and provision (or mothball) compute supplies in keeping with alterations widespread; and decrease total charge of ownership (TCO) -- likewise attach to CI.
"in case you require extra compute [resources], in case you require extra horsepower, we will provide that for you. we will deliver that as either a pipe into your facts core [e.g., from an external cloud service] or [as an on-premises deployment] interior your records middle," he explains.
Conceptual difference or now not, CI employs one of the vital same terminology -- and in many respects, paints with the equal dynamic/all the time-on/automatic/productive/TCO-decreasing brush -- as its predecessor, certainly with recognize both to virtualization and records core TCO adjustment.
so far as being over-arching, CI also invitations assessment with HP's Adaptive commercial enterprise pitch, which (when it was first introduced, more than five years in the past) HP appreciated to promote the use of phrases equivalent to "holistic" and "integrated."
believe a December, 2003 press unencumber in which the enterprise introduced a "holistic approach to virtualization" as a part of its (still then-evolving) Adaptive commercial enterprise approach. (Adaptive enterprise, for the record, succeeded a predecessor approach: Adaptive Infrastructure, which HP unveiled at in regards to the same time that IBM Corp. announced its eBusiness On Demand strategy in late 2002.)
The swap to a digital environment has already paid off for information core supervisor David grant, although it will pay extra dividends this week. Hewlett-Packard Co. announced this week the rollout of a number of new virtualization items designed to make it faster and more straightforward to control digital servers.
Jonathan Eunice, foremost analyst for Nashua, N.H.-primarily based research firm Illuminata Inc., spoke of HP's announcement is the newest installment of the virtualization technology updates HP has launched annually for the previous 10 years.
"This liberate is much less about this selected adventure than about this yr," he talked about.
furnish, who is the facts center manager for Mitel Networks Corp., had some challenging thinking to do towards the end of 2003, as leases for approximately half of the 12 servers working all his core business functions were due to expire. As he mulled his options, provide spoke of, "Our theme turned into consolidation. We additionally wanted to achieve more merits and be more bendy in responding to new business needs and technology."
Mitel, based in Ottowa, gives IP-based voice, video and facts company communications gadget and features. The company employs about 2,000 individuals global.
grant chose virtualization technology from HP to consolidate 12 servers into two clustered HP 9000 rp8420 servers running HP-UX 11i in a virtual server environment. He additionally considered items from IBM and EMC Corp., but in the end decided to extend an existing relationship with HP.
In elementary terms, virtualization allows for users to run different items of utility on the identical piece of hardware, to pool unused computing vigour and to shift extra computing vigour to the areas experiencing the maximum use, in actual time.
"If, abruptly company picks up, the working equipment is at a hundred% capacity, the needle is towards the end of the dial and everyone's screaming at it, we will allocate further methods and RAM with no need to reinstall or extend," provide pointed out. "we are able to allocate extra CPU and RAM (from in different places) and the bottleneck goes away."
The swap reduce supply's preservation responsibilities from 12 programs unfold over two facts centers to simply two servers in a single spot, reduced his lease funds whereas giving him five times his previous computing power, more advantageous his server utilization through 20% and made it easier to shift unused components to the areas where they're most necessary.
"The intention of virtualization is to make things easier," Eunice pointed out, "but you had to have a Ph.D. to make things easier," because of the complexity of the setting up and management of virtualization know-how. HP's newest virtualization items clear up at the least a part of that issue, Eunice talked about.
HP announced the following virtualization products:
expansion of the multi-operating equipment HP virtual Server ambiance for HP Integrity servers.
New HP-UX 11i mission-essential virtualization capabilities.
Accelerated availability of OpenVMS on virtualized Integrity servers.
New packaged software with VMware and HP ProLiant essentials Virtualization management application.
a brand new network consolidation service.
supply is given that workload management application, that could automate workloads in the virtual environment in response to rules and policies, that is a part of the HP new releases.
Nick van der Zweep, director of virtualization and utility computing for HP, spoke of the brand new choices circulation HP's virtualization choices out of the basic stages and make virtualization expertise extra available to the individuals charged with enforcing and operating such techniques.
"Virtualization is know-how that makes a server into two, three or 4 servers," van der Zweep spoke of. "The price proposition focused at CIOs and CFOs is dramatic cost savings and more efficient provider levels. however it's system directors and storage administrators who should put into effect it to make it happen.
"we've developed some management items, planning items, and configuration and optimization items that make it handy, so a regular gadget administrator can plan out how they need to lay out their virtual atmosphere versus a daily environment, then switch on optimization," van der Zweep spoke of.

eventually week's pink Hat Summit in Boston, Hewlett-Packard vp for industry-common Servers and utility Scott Farrand became caught with out PR minders by using ServerWatch's Sean Michael Kerner, and may have slipped off message a little bit. In a video interview, Farrand mentioned that HP turned into shifting its strategy for mission-vital programs faraway from the Itanium processor and the HP-UX working gadget and toward x86-based mostly servers and crimson Hat business Linux (RHEL), via a undertaking to carry company-vital performance to the Linux operating equipment referred to as task Dragon Hawk, itself a subset of HP's mission Odyssey.
challenge Dragon Hawk is an effort to convey the high-availability aspects of HP-UX, equivalent to ServiceGuard (which has already been ported to Linux) to RHEL and the Intel x86 platform with a mix of server firmware and utility. Dragon Hawk servers will run RHEL 6 and provide the means to partition processors into up to 32 isolated virtual machines—a expertise pulled from HP-UX's technique useful resource manager. Farrand stated that HP become positioning Dragon Hawk as its future mission-critical platform. "We definitely assist (Itanium and HP-UX) and love all that, but going forward our method for mission-crucial computing is moving to an x86 world," Farrand told Kernel. "or not it's not with the aid of twist of fate that individuals have de-committed to Itanium, particularly Oracle."
HP vice chairman Scott Farrand, interviewed at pink Hat Summit by way of Sean Michael Kerner of ServerWatch
due to the fact HP is still expecting judgement in its case towards Oracle, that statement can also have made a few americans in HP's company important methods unit choke on their morning coffee. And sources at HP say that Farrand drifted somewhat off-course in his comments. The business's respectable line on venture Odyssey is that it is in parallel to and complementary to the company's investments in Itanium and HP-UX. A supply at HP stated Farrand omitted a part of HP's task Odyssey briefing notes to that effect: "venture Odyssey contains persevered funding in our based mission-critical portfolio of Integrity, NonStop, HP-UX, OpenVMS in addition to our investments in constructing future mission-essential x86 platforms. offering Serviceguard for Linux/x86 is a step toward reaching that mission-critical x86 portfolio."
mission Odyssey, although, is HP's clear road ahead with shoppers that have not purchased into HP-UX during the past. without a aid for Itanium past crimson Hat Enterprse Linux version 5, and with RHEL being more and more valuable to HP's approach for cloud computing (and, pending litigation, assist for Oracle on HP servers), perhaps Farrand became simply a bit bit ahead of the company in his pronouncement.
Tip of the hat to Ars reader Caveira for his tip on the ServerWatch story.

I have to integrate on a SAN OpenVMS, Sun Solaris, Windows/NT /2000 and IBM AIX. Which vendor would you choose or do I have the choice because of VMS?
Vendors to consider: Hitachi, Compaq, EMC (Symetrix, Clariion)
The answer to this question depends on the version of VMS you currently use. Hitachi has plans to support OpenVMS VERY soon. EMC supports OpenVMS today, but under older versions of VMS requires a third party adapter (trident controller) to translate CI based MSCP(mass storage control protocol) traffic to SCSI in their box. The newer implementations are pure fibre, but requires OpenVMS 7.2 (Tru64 UNIX needs 5.0a) and above. Compaq is most likely your best bet here because VMS was invented at Compaq/Digital and they have the best support for that environment. The StorageWorks platform can support all the versions you are using concurrently and has native support for Alpha systems, VAX systems and VMS and NT clustering. Go to http://www.compaq.com/openvms, for more information on supporting VMS in a SAN.
10g Release 2 (10.2) for hp OpenVMS
This document contains important information that was not included in the platform-specific or product-specific documentation. Except where noted in the text, the information in these notes applies to Oracle Database 10g release 2 for hp OpenVMS Alpha and hp OpenVMS Itanium.
This document may be updated after it is released. To check for updates to this document and to view other Oracle documentation, see the Documentation section on the Oracle Technology Network (OTN) Web site:
These Release Notes are part of the following documentation set for the Oracle10g Database for hp OpenVMS:
This document contains the following topics:
1 Change in the Media Format
Oracle Database 10g release 2 installation media is available on DVD and not on CD-ROM. hp Intergrity Servers include a DVD reader, while some AlphaServers do not have a DVD reader.
If the AlphaServer system includes a DVD drive, then you can install 10g release 2 directly from the DVD media.
If the AlphaServer system does not include a DVD drive and you cannot use the download option, then you can consider the following alternatives to install the software.
Add a DVD drive to the AlphaServer system.
There are 3rd party USB and IDE DVD drives that can be added to the AlphaServer system to perform the installation. Check with the service provider regarding any service and support issues.
If the AlphaServer on which you intend to install 10g release 2 is part of a cluster and some other node, such as an Integrity server, in the cluster has a DVD drive, you can serve the DVD drive to the AlphaServer system using MSCP.
If the AlphaServer on which you intend to install 10g release 2 is not part of a cluster but another OpenVMS system on the network has a DVD drive you can copy the installation kit from the system with the DVD drive to the AlphaServer system using TCP/IP or DECnet.
2 Products Not Available in the Current Release
The following products are not available in this release. They may be available in future releases.
Agent control utility (agtctl)
Apache modules mod-JServ, mod-perl, and mod-ssl
Automatic Storage Management
Oracle Database 10g supports only the file system as a storage option for both the Oracle Database files as well as the Oracle Database recovery files.
Cursor size utility (cursize)
Database file size utility (dbfsize)
Database File Migrate utility
Disk striping simulator utility (stripe)
DSGA (Direct SGA Attach) shared library
This release does not support EJB on the server. If customers have iAS in middle tier, however, they can still use the database on OpenVMS in order to use EJB.
File Map Utility (fmputl)
File Map Utility Helper (fmputlhp)
Grid Control Support
Oracle Database 10g release 2 (10.2) can be managed as a target by Grid Control 10.1.0.4. However, Oracle Database 10g release 2 is not supported by Grid Control 10.1.0.4 as a repository.
Grid Scan Utility (grdcscan)
Hewlett-Packard Fortran Compiler (F90)
For hp OpenVMS Alpha:
The Hewlett-Packard Fortran compiler (formerly the DIGITAL Fortran 90) is not supported.
To check which FORTRAN compiler is on the system, run the following command:
$ HELP FORTRAN
If the following message is displayed:
"Invokes the Hewlett-Packard Fortran (formerly the DIGITAL Fortran 90) compiler."
then the FORTRAN command should be qualified with /OLD_F77, as follows:
$ FORT/OLD_F77 foo.FOR
For hp OpenVMS Itanium:
The Fortran compiler on OpenVMS Itanium is only F90 compatible. Because Pro*FORTRAN assumes the F77 standard, Oracle cannot support issues when Pro*FORTRAN is used on modules that deviate from that standard. Oracle does not provide support or solution for any issues arising from this mismatch in the supported standard.
HS Distributed External Procedure agent (hsdepxa)
HS OTS agent (hsots)

Oracle XA functionality is supported only within the Oracle Database acting in the role of Transaction Manager as well as Resource Manager.
Oracle XA is the Oracle implementation of the X/Open Distributed Transaction Processing (DTP) XA interface. The XA standard specifies a bidirectional interface between resource managers (for example, Oracle) that provide access to shared resources within transactions, and between a transaction service that monitors and resolves transactions.
Oracle Call Interface has XA functionality. When building a TP-monitor XA application, ensure that the TP-monitor libraries (that define the symbols ax_reg and ax_unreg) are placed in the link line before the Oracle client shared library. This link restriction is required only when using the XA dynamic registration (Oracle XA switch xaoswd).
Oracle Database XA calls are defined in both the client shared library (libclntsh.so) and the client static library (libclntst.olb). These libraries are located in the ORA_ROOT:[lib32] directory.
XDK for C++
XML SQL Utility
3 Product Issues
The following section contains information about issues related to Oracle10g and associated products such as Oracle Database installation, configuration, and upgrade:
3.1 Enabling Automated Backups
While installing Oracle Database, the Specify Backup and Recovery Options screen may appear truncated if the system does not have the required fonts installed. If the system has only fixed-width fonts, you may not be able to fully specify the required information in the Backup Job Credentials area of the screen. To work around this issue, do not select Enable Automated Backups on this screen. After the installation is complete, use Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Grid Control to enable automated backups.
3.2 Oracle interMedia
A known issue exists with Oracle interMedia on Oracle Database 10g. The problem may arise when making calls to mmtk_process() or mmtk_ext_process() in ordibody.sql, yielding errors such as the following:

3.3 CRS/RAC Known Issues
The following are known Cluster Ready Services (CRS) issues in the current release:
While installing CRS, the device on which an installation is created is visible and accessible across all nodes of a cluster installation. For example, for a CRS installation created on disk A to run on nodes B and C, disk A is accessible on both nodes. For this reason, it is not necessary to copy a device across nodes. You may see error messages similar to the following in the .ERR files created under the log directory of orainventory:
Error in copying file : rootadd.com
oracle.ops.mgmt.cluster.ClusterException: PRKC-1004 : Problem in copying file to node
These errors can be safely ignored.
During a Custom installation of Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC), Oracle Network Configuration Assistant (NETCA) is displayed at the end of the installation procedure even though the Database Creation option is not selected. You must run Virtual IP Configuration Assistant (VIPCA) before running NETCA for RAC. To do so, perform one of the following tasks:
Cancel the NETCA, and then run VIPCA, NETCA and Database Configuration Assistant (DBCA) in that order.
Run VIPCA from a separate window, then continue with NETCA that is displayed during custom installation, and then run DBCA.
In the RAC database alert log files, messages similar to the following are displayed:
SSKGXP_IP: Primary interface down
error error 0
These messages are displayed if a private interconnect is not selected for RAC cluster communication, and the public IP address of the nodes are used for cluster communication. These messages can be ignored.
While running srvctl or crs_* commands, you must enclose the arguments to these commands in double quotes. For example:
SRVCTL START DATABASE "-d" "orcl"
CRS_STAT "-p" "ora.ORCL.ORCL1.inst"
Unlike Java, OpenVMS is case insensitive. Thus, the SRVCTL commands throws an error if the arguments are not passed with the right case. Moreover, the resource name you enter for CRS_* commands should match the name it is registered with in the Oracle Cluster Registry (OCR).
While running Virtual IP Configuration Assistant (VIPCA), tracing information is displayed on the terminal from where VIPCA is run. You can ignore this information. To suppress the tracing information, you must define the following logical name before running VIPCA.
$ DEFINE X$SRVM_TRACE X
3.4 Security for External Jobs
Refer to section 1.5.6 of Administrator's Guide to set the security for external jobs.
3.5 Non-Applicable Parameters
The following INIT.ORA parameters are not applicable to OpenVMS. Do not change their default values:
3.6 Known Problems
The following are known problems in the current release:
Bug 4420104: Temporary files PERLPIPE*.COM created in login directory
This has no impact on the functioning of the EMAgent. The temporary files can be manually deleted. Refer to the bug for more details and latest updates.
Bug 4420463: Delays in Listener Start/Stop from Console
This problem has not been observed in an Oracle installation, but has only been observed within the internal test QA area, which was set up with additional spooling of debugging information. However, the latency may reproduce in a customer environment, although very unlikely. To correct this, repeat the operation or perform the operation directly on the Server box where the listener is running. The modified status is automatically picked by the EM console within a few minutes of the direct operation.
5333539: ORA errors with additional information are incorrectly reported in 10g release 1.
The ORA errors that contain additional errors, the additional information get translated into VMS errors.
If you select 'Generate Database Create Scripts' when running the Database Configuration Assistant, then error messages similar to the following are displayed:
P2-0310: unable to open file
SP2-0310: unable to open file
These errors can be safely ignored. It is not required to create a repository on OpenVMS, since the Database Console product is not supported.
When performing an Oracle Database Custom installation, the following message may appear in the ORA_ROOT:[ADMIN.sid.CREATE]JSERVER.LOG file:
1 :ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_JAVA", line 236
1 :ORA-06512: at line 2
1 :ORA-29558: JAccelerator (NCOMP) not installed. Refer to Install Guide for instructions.
This message can be safely ignored as the JAccelerator component is not supported.
After running the RUNINSTALLER command, messages similar to the following may appear on the terminal session from which the command was started:
Unknown host: _WSA38
X Toolkit Warning: Cannot convert string
"-*-Menu-Medium-R-Normal--*-120-*-*-P-*-ISO8859-1" to type FontStruct
The Installer GUI should still appear and these messages can be ignored.
4 Other Product Issues
The following sections provide information about issues that affect other Oracle products:
4.1 NetCA Help
In the Oracle Net Configuration Assistant (NetCA) help, the link to the Select Oracle Context help topic is broken. The text for this topic is as follows:
Directory Usage Configuration, Select Oracle Context
Oracle administrative content has been found in more than one location in the directory. Oracle administrative content is stored in Oracle Context, a subtree in the directory that stores Oracle entries.
From the list, select or enter the location you want to use as the default Oracle Context location from which this computer will access Oracle entries, such as connect identifiers.
4.2 NetCA IPC Protocol
If you select the use of the IPC protocol for the network layer, NetCA cannot reliably determine whether or not the key value specified in the protocol is in use. To let the user specify whether or not the key is actually available, NetCA displays the following message:
The information provided for this listener is currently in use by other software on this computer. You can proceed with this configuration as it is, but it will not be possible to start this listener until the conflict is resolved. Would you like to continue with the configuration anyway?
When this message is displayed, you should check if there are other listener processes on the system. In addition, you should ensure that the key value you have specified is not already in use. If it is not in use, then proceed with the configuration session. If it is in use, then shut down the listener using the key. Alternatively, you can use the NetCA screen to specify that you do not want to continue with the installation and then select a key value that is not in use on the system.
4.3 Grid Features
Oracle Database New Features for Oracle Database 10g release 1 (10.1) lists two Grid features that are not available in this release of Oracle Database 10g: Resonance and Transparent Session Migration.
4.4 Installing Enterprise Security Manager
To install Enterprise Security Manager (ESM), install Oracle Client and choose the Administrator installation type.
4.5 Full-Text Searching with Oracle Text
For full-text searching with Oracle Text, you must create XML tables manually.
If you will need to use Oracle Text indexes for text-based ora:contains searches over a collection of XML elements, then do not use the XML schema annotation storeVarrayAsTable="true". This annotation causes element collections to be persisted as rows in an Index Organized Table (IOT). Oracle Text does not support IOTs.
To be able to use Oracle Text to search the contents of element collections, set parameter genTables="false" during schema registration. Then create the necessary tables manually, without using the ORGANIZATION INDEX OVERFLOW clause. The tables will then be heap-organized instead of index-organized (IOT), as shown in the following example:
CREATE TABLE PurchaseOrder of XMLTYPE
STORE AS TABLE ACTION_TABLE ((PRIMARY KEY
STORE AS TABLE LINEITEM_TABLE ((PRIMARY KEY
4.6 Oracle Net Configuration Files
Files such as LISTENER.ORA, TNSNAMES.ORA, SQLNET.ORA, if configured manually, or copied and edited from earlier releases of Oracle Database may have record attributes that are incompatible with Oracle Database 10g release 2. The software cannot read such files. The required record format is stream_lf and the record attributes are carriage_control and carriage_return.
This may result in:
Inability to start the listener
Services not registered with the listener
Inability to connect to other databases
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name
Run the following command on each file affected:
$ DIR/FULL filename
An output similar to the following may be displayed:
Record format: Variable length, maximum 255 bytes
Record attributes: Carriage return carriage control
If the output includes the preceding entries, then run the following command:
$ CONVERT/FDL=SYS$INPUT filename filename
5 Known Restrictions
The following sections lists current restrictions for using Oracle Database 10g.
OpenVMS always performs its I/O asynchronously. Several INIT.ORA parameters that mimic asynchronous behavior are not needed on OpenVMS. Refer to the Oracle Database Administrator's Guide, section 1.5.3, for the list of parameters that are not supported on OpenVMS.
Copying Oracle Executables
Moving executables from one OpenVMS machine to another is not recommended due to the usage of shared libraries and to the difficulty of ensuring valid referencing. Oracle recommends that you relink on the node where the executable will run.
Oracle Targets Paths in the Enterprise Manager Agent
Due to an inherent characteristic of the Perl language, wherein it attempts to translate any string with the '$' character in it as a Perl variable, it is strongly recommended that the paths used for Oracle targets, such as oracle_home, listener_ora_dir do not contain the '$' (dollar) character in them. This issue is tracked through Oracle bug 4299411.
During installation, when you click Next on the Installation Details screen, Oracle Universal Installer processes the information that you provided up to that point. This may take 10 minutes. During this time, it may appear that Oracle Universal Installer is not responding. There may be similar delays on other installer screens.
Database Configuration Assistant Runtime Considerations
When running the Database Configuration Assistant, the assistant performs background operations such as running databases. As a result, some of the assistant screens do not change for 10 minutes or more, depending on the system performance.
If the Password Management button on the last Database Configuration Assistant screen is not visible, then expand the Database Configuration Assistant window to use the Password Management feature.
Silent Installation is not supported with this Oracle Database release on OpenVMS. Customers are free to attempt silent installation and many install scenarios should pose no problem, but if issues do arise, installation must be done interactively.
SCSNODE and TCP$INET_HOST
Installation of Oracle Database 10g will fail if the values of the SYSGEN parameter SCSNODE and the logical name TCP$INET_HOST are not the same. These must be configured to deliver same value, at least temporarily, for the install to succeed.

A New Prescription for NT Administrators: XLNT
System administrators who move from Unix, OpenVMS or other mature operating systems to Windows NT invariably notice one thing: the Windows NT native command language and scheduler are not up to the task of day-to-day administration. Entire books have been written on the topic of building effective system management tools from the native commands provided by Windows NT, but they strike many as working too hard to prove a point.
What’s needed is an effective replacement for Windows NT’s weak command shell and feature-poor "AT" scheduler. Clearly Microsoft understands the inherent weaknesses of Windows NT’s CMD.EXE command line processor. The Windows Scripting Host (WSH), a powerful but underutilized script execution facility in Windows NT 4.0, was released to provide scripting services for both Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 9x. While WSH is remarkably powerful, some system administrators look for an approach that combines WSH’s power with relatively simple syntax and command structure. Those administrators should take a look at the XLNT command and scripting language from Advanced Systems Concepts.
For those who have worked in the OpenVMS environment, XLNT will seem like an old friend: The scripting language is based on Digital Equipment Corp.’s DCL language. The commands and syntax in XLNT are similar to those found in DCL, but that is where the similarity stops. XLNT is a rich command language clearly designed with Windows NT administrators in mind.
XLNT comes in a variety of editions for both Intel and Alpha processors, and is currently supported on Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0. Windows 2000 support is expected to follow. The standard edition provides XLNT’s basic set of commands while a professional edition adds a development environment, script debugger and a utility to compile scripts into an executable image. These executable images can then be run on any machine that has a copy of XLNT’s Run Time License Edition.
XLNT, which is short for eXtended Language for Windows NT, installed easily on our Windows NT Server 4.0 system. Once the software was installed, XLNT provides the option to install a network command interface, an RPC service and a batch queue service. Once completed, the XLNT installation process creates its own program group. The makers of XLNT have thoughtfully provided SMS installation support in the form of unattended answer files for each of the XLNT editions.
A "$" With Some KickWhile some administrators will be initially unimpressed with XLNT’s dowdy "$" prompt, closer examination reveals a powerful environment for managing the Windows NT environment. As an example, we tried converting a VBScript-based utility that deleted all files older than seven days, with an extension of "*.TMP" from all user directories and converted it to XLNT. The VBScript utility had more than 130 lines of code -- our XLNT script had five.
One of the reasons for this is XLNT’s superior string manipulation facility. With standard Windows NT commands it’s all but impossible to extract useful information from the output of commands. XLNT provides "lexical functions" that allow you to request, extract and use a tremendous amount of information from the system. While the lexical functions will be familiar to users of OpenVMS, many of the functions provided in XLNT are Windows NT specific. We were able to use the lexical functions to write a short script that generated a list of all domains and machines in our network and compare it to a master configuration. Exceptions were placed in a text file and mailed to the network administrator using XLNT’s MAIL SEND/SMTP command.
As an administrator of many Internet services, this reviewer especially appreciated the inclusion of FTP specifications in addition to UNC file names. For instance, an hourly update of a production Web site was automated by simply using the XLNT COPY command with an FTP URL as the destination. Another helpful feature for remote administration is the support of an /ON qualifier for many of XLNT’s commands. This allows you to execute a supported XLNT command or script on a remote machine without having to install a second copy of the product.
Two administrative tasks in the day-to-day work of a Windows NT manager cry out for automation: user and printer management. XLNT provides a SECURITY command that allows administrators to script any task that would normally be carried out using User Manager. While the graphical User Manager utility is fine for occasional administration of user accounts, large-scale additions are better done through an industrial strength script. The SECURITY command allows you to make additions and changes to any Windows NT user, group, or policy. XLNT also supplies a MANAGE command for creating and manipulating printers on machines.
One thing we would like to see in future editions of XLNT is a native capability for managing and communicating with other processes on the system. A typical repetitive task for Windows NT administrators is the execution of a utility, the sending of a command to the window opened by the program and then the closing of the window. XLNT provides an interface to the Windows Scripting Host as a way to control program execution for utilities that support WSH. Unfortunately, many basic Windows NT utilities aren’t supported by WSH. It would be more useful to have a mechanism to control program execution built into XLNT.
It’s tempting to view XLNT as nothing more than a port of an old command language to Windows NT. That sells the tool short. XLNT gives system administrators the ability to script sophisticated, repetitive tasks. It’s as easy to use as CMD.EXE and, with its ability to interface to WSH, it has all the power and flexibility a Windows NT administrator needs to provide effective solutions for day-to-day management tasks.
