IBM promoting Lotus Notes/Domino company to HCL for $1.8B | Real Questions and Pass4sure dumps

IBM introduced remaining evening that it's selling the remaining accessories from its 1995 acquisition of Lotus to Indian firm HCL for $1.8 billion.

IBM paid $3.5 billion for Lotus back in the day. The massive pieces listed here are Lotus Notes, Domino and Portal. These were a large a part of IBM’s commercial enterprise business for a long time, but ultimate year huge Blue began to draw back, selling the building half to HCL, whereas conserving handle of revenue and advertising.

This announcement marks the conclusion of the road for IBM involvement. With the construction of the platform out of its control, and in want of cash after spending $34 billion for purple Hat, most likely IBM comfortably determined it now not made experience to maintain any part of this in-house.

As for HCL, it sees a chance to proceed to construct the Notes/Domino business, and it’s seizing it with this purchase. “The colossal-scale deployments of these products deliver us with a very good possibility to attain and serve heaps of world firms across a wide range of industries and markets,” C Vijayakumar, president and CEO at HCL applied sciences, stated in a statement saying the deal.

Alan Lepofsky, an analyst at Constellation analysis who maintains shut watch on the commercial enterprise collaboration house, says the sale may characterize a clean birth for software that IBM hasn’t actually been paying shut consideration to for some time. “HCL is much more drawn to Notes/Domino than IBM has been for a decade. they are investing heavily, attempting to rejuvenate the brand,” Lepofsky told TechCrunch.

whereas this utility may additionally consider lengthy in the enamel, Notes and Domino are still in use in lots of corners of the enterprise, and this is especially true in EMEA (Europe, middle East and Africa) and AP (Asia Pacific), Lepofsky said.

He added that IBM appears to be absolutely exiting the collaboration house with this sale. “It appears that IBM is accomplished with collaboration, out of the online game,” he pointed out.

This move makes sense for IBM, which is relocating in a special course as it develops its cloud company. The pink Hat acquisition in October, in particular, indicates that the enterprise wants to embody private and hybrid cloud deployments, and older application like Lotus Notes and Domino don’t in reality play a job in that world.

The deal, which is discipline to regulatory approval procedures, is expected to close in the core of subsequent 12 months.

once king of business application, Lotus Notes is dragging IBM down | Real Questions and Pass4sure dumps

Lotus Notes is coming! Or, perhaps it's declining

When IBM purchased Lotus for $3.5 billion in 1995, it regarded as though the venerable computing giant was nearly to lock up the utility trade and coast to unstoppable gains.

Eighteen years later, Lotus appears more like a millstone around IBM’s neck than a flywheel giving it additional velocity.

based on a report in the Wall highway Journal, in develop of IBM’s q4 income free up these days, Lotus become the weakest performer in IBM’s application portfolio, shedding 6.four p.c of its earnings extent within the first 9 months of 2012.

It probably accounts for roughly $1 billion in annual earnings, in response to estimates sourced through the WSJ, or one-sixth to 1-fifth of IBM’s typical utility company.

sarcastically, Lotus once led the way toward these days’s hottest commercial enterprise technologies, the collaborative application that helps teams speak and work collectively on tasks. one of the success reports of that niche is Yammer, which Microsoft bought closing 12 months for $1.2 billion. So, why is IBM sitting at the back of the pack in its place of leading from the front?

Lotus, which made the first blockbuster “killer app” within the Nineteen Eighties (Lotus 1-2-three, a phenomenally a success spreadsheet application), went on to create Lotus Notes, a magnificent groupware suite that came out within the early Nineties earlier than any one had any thought what “groupware” become.

I used it considerably at a couple of businesses I worked with. initially, it turned into mysterious and strong. Like most conclusion-clients of Lotus Notes, I used it basically as an electronic mail software. It had its quirks, but it labored. however there turned into another dimension to Notes, a powerful, programmable backend that can help you create databases and workspaces for collaborative work, contact administration, counsel sharing, and communique.

these days, we’d call it a collaboration device or a company social-media device, and it would be web-based and requisites-compliant, like Yammer, Jive, and Huddle. in the absence of requirements, Notes’ engineers needed to invent everything themselves, making it a clever but proprietary solution.

however lengthy earlier than those net-based startups got here alongside, Notes become already dropping its cool. The client utility became large and bloated. It became expensive to put in force and problematic to customise.

because the internet received recognition in the late Nineties, Lotus added necessities, like POP3 and IMAP e mail interfaces. They didn’t accomplish that well with the necessities department, however, riding anyone who needed to use an online mail client with a Lotus Notes mail server completely insane.

The upshot is that, simply as the cyber web grew to be known, Lotus Notes grew to become worrying and out of date.

certain, it became nonetheless potent, but unlocking the power of Notes often required professional capabilities, giving upward thrust to a sector of Notes consultants. No shock that these consultants are having a hard time getting taken severely these days. The WSJ prices a Notes consultant who complains about his reception:

“i'm going to a celebration, and that i presently get insulted,” says Eugen Tarnow, a director of the consultancy Avalon company methods, which sells the getting old electronic mail application to groups. “they say, ‘Lotus Notes, that’s nevertheless around?’ It’s no fun.”

unluckily, IBM’s engineers realized the significance of necessities compliance too late and didn’t bake interoperability into Lotus Notes neatly adequate or early satisfactory. So, as effective as Notes can be, it became and is sick-prepared to work in these days’s API-prosperous cloud ambiance.

IBM has more modern social-media software, too, however handiest makes about $fifty five million per yr from that section of its company. So the challenge for IBM is to continue milking as lots salary as it can from Lotus, whereas gradually transferring the branding and the income to more recent, sexier strains of enterprise. One example: Renaming its annual Lotus conference, Lotusphere, as “Connect2013.” Yeah, that’ll support.

We’ll be gazing to look if the revenue record sheds any more gentle on IBM’s efforts to turn Notes around. but as for me, I’m no longer keeping my breath.

The Direct Stock Market uses Lotus Notes for E-commerce | real questions and Pass4sure dumps

The Direct Stock Market uses Lotus Notes for E-commerce
  • By Jason J. Meserve
  • 07/23/2001
  • When it comes to the World-Wide Web, updating content is key to getting customers to return. But updating static pages with data from disparate sources, converting to HTML and posting online can be a daunting and repetitive task.

The Direct Stock Market of Santa Monica, Calif., faced this problem daily. Their site -- -- advertises small companies seeking investors for an initial public offering of stock. Stock offering announcements, company information and financials data for each company is accessible via the 'Net so prospective investors can see where their money will be invested.

"These smaller companies [which don't qualify for the Nasdaq Small Capital market] don't have access to money used to raise capital," explained Kevin McCall, marketing coordinator for The Direct Stock Market. "We use the Internet as an avenue to reach investors; that is much more cost efficient."

Inefficient was the process of keeping listed company information up-to-date: Companies who wanted to be listed or needed to update information had to send the proper data on a disk to The Direct Stock Market's Web person. The data on the disk, such as a word processing document or spreadsheet, had to be converted to HTML using editors or hand-coding, then placed online. Eight to nine static HTML pages had to be created or changed for each company listing. Information listed on the Web sites was also duplicated in an IBM Lotus Notes database, which the company had been using for years, accessible only from within The Direct Stock Market network via a Notes client.

In May of this year, The Direct Stock Market used Lotus' Domino to integrate the two data-entry processes into a single process that cuts out the Web programmer middleman and gives listed companies direct access to their own information using Netscape Navigator 3.0 from Netscape Communications Corp., Mountain View, Calif. Now companies can enter data directly into the Domino database and have it appear on the The Direct Stock Market's site almost instantaneously.

"We've eliminated the duplication of creating, E-mailing and us putting the information up," said Cynthia Copsey, The Direct Stock Market's vice president of marketing. "It saves time and lets our customers' information be put directly into our work flow."

Fuel Creative, an Internet-based software developer and Web design firm also located in Santa Monica, designed the Domino back end and created what it calls an Intranet/Internet Application (Web site) Editor through Netscape. Brian Holmes and Michelangelo Capraro, Fuel's founders, built the site in approximately three-and-a-half months after extensive planning involving The Direct Stock Market.

"We talked to The Direct Stock Market a lot, getting background and opinions on their current site, then finding out how they would like to see it improved," said Capraro.

Based on the talks with The Direct Stock Market, Fuel created a system where corporate information pages are dynamically generated out of the Domino database. However, Domino-generated pages are typically bland and sterile-looking, according to Capraro and Holmes. One of the hurdles Fuel faced was making the information the user sees in their browser more eye-pleasing.

Using Lotus Script, JavaScript and Shockwave Director, a multimedia plug-in for Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer from San Francisco-based Macromedia Inc., Fuel created agents that intercept the data coming out of the Domino server and reformat the data based on specific "preference pages" before the user sees the information appear in their browser. This method allows The Direct Stock Market to change the look of their site by modifying just the preferences page, rather than hundreds of individual pages.

"Our new site is so much more user-friendly and navigable," said Copsey. She added that since companies enter their information themselves, it gives them a sense of ownership when they put things on The Direct Stock Market site.

Currently, The Direct Stock Market and Fuel are working on upgrades and improvements to the site. Internal users at The Direct Stock Market must still use a Notes client to do much of the database administration. Fuel is working on a Web-based desktop that will let internal users modify and administer the site with only Navigator.

"With only one tool required to administer the site, a new person [starting at The Direct Stock Market] only needs to learn how to click on "Netscape" to administer the site [rather than learning Notes]," said Fuel's Holmes. "We're pushing the limits of Notes with this technology."

The Direct Stock Market is also planning to build a "trading floor" on its site that will enable investors to trade these small companies online. Copsey said the proposed trading floor is awaiting the approval of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

  • Introduction

Welcome to another exciting edition of Linux.Ars! Some of you may remember a previous Linux.Ars which featured a Ruby/Pcap example of how to monitor network traffic. Today, Martin Colello provides us with an introduction to network monitoring with Big Brother, an excellent tool for enterprise-level monitoring solutions. For this week's Tools, Tips and Tweaks segment, I wrote an introduction to command-line XML manipulation with the xmlstarlet utility. I also wrote a brief review of SuperTux, a highly addictive, Mario-inspired screen scroller.

Linux.Ars is all about you, so don't be afraid to get involved! Want to do a section for a future edition? Have a suggestion for a topic that you want us to write about? I would love some feedback. We want your comments, complaints, suggestions, requests, free hardware, death threats, or disparaging remarks about my assorted deficiencies. Developers Corner Creating custom nmap-based tests for Big Brother

There are many companies utilizing Big Brother for their network/server monitoring needs. That is in no small part due to the fact that with a standard Big Brother installation you can become aware of problems before your customers do, thereby avoiding the dreaded Monday morning meeting with management.

One of the most useful features of Big Brother is the ability to create custom tests that reflect your particular environment. In describing how to create those tests, I will not be going over the install procedures for Big Brother in this article, as the documentation which accompanies the software is more than adequate. Also please note that the custom nmap script presented here is also compatible with hobbit, which is a more advanced open-source monitoring tool based on Big Brother.

Big Brother comes with a relatively strong list of network tests that can be performed with no customization. With nmap we can add any services we like to the monitor, including things like Lotus Notes, Oracle, VOIP, and so on. The script requires a data file, nmap-data, which looks like this:

nmap-data Bob the Notes Guy. Fred the iSeries Guy. Linda the VOIP Lady.

This data file is colon delimited, the fields are as follows:

  • Server Name — the name of the server on which the service resides. The fully qualified domain name should be used, and it should match exactly the entry in bb-hosts for this server.
  • Big Brother Column Name — the column header text to be rendered on the Big Brother display for this test. This text should be as short as possible to maximize available screen space.
  • Port Number — the number of the port on which the service is hosted. The port number can be determined by running "nmap servername" from your Big Brother server.
  • NMAP Text — this is the text the script will expect nmap to provide when scanning the defined port. For example, if you run "nmap" you will see some text indicating http is available on port 80. And so for the NMAP Text, you would choose a word from the nmap output that indicates the service is available.
  • Contact Info— this text will be displayed as is on the Big Brother display. Here you can define any information you like, such as the person responsible for the server, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, etc.
  • The script follows: #!/usr/bin/perl -w # use strict; # Initialize some variables my $servername; my $testname; my $port; my $output; my $results; my $color; my $machine; my $line; my $stat; my $errormsg; my $date = `/bin/date`; chomp($date); my @temp; # Read in data from config file my $configfile = '/usr/local/bb/ext/nmap/nmap-data';# Change this to suit your config open CONFIG, $configfile or die "Cannot open config file $configfile: $!"; my @configdata = <CONFIG>; close CONFIG; chomp(@configdata); # Start main loop to run once for each line in config file foreach(@configdata){ # Break up config line into separate variables @temp = split /:/, $_; $servername = $temp[0]; $testname = $temp[1]; $port = $temp[2]; $output = $temp[3]; $errormsg = $temp[4]; # Get results of nmap scan $results = `/usr/bin/nmap $servername -p $port | /bin/grep $output`; # Set color for results $color = 'red';# Set to red by default, then check for green $stat = "Service $testname not seen on $servername. Check $servername. $errormsg"; if ($results =~ /$output/) { $color = 'green'; $stat = "Service $testname is active on $servername."; } # Create machine name with commas instead of dots. # (Required by big brother) $machine = $servername; $_ = $machine; (s/./,/g); $machine = $_; # Create line to send to big brother server. $line = "status $machine.$testname $color <BR><BR>$date <BR><BR>$stat"; # Use bb command to send results to big brother server. system("/usr/local/bb/bin/bb "$line"");# Change to ip address of your bb server }# End of main loop and program

While the logic of the above script is fairly simple and easy to understand, it adds a powerful tool to your monitoring capability. Any service can be monitored for availability so long as you know the port number where the service is provided.

To run this script automatically as part of your Big Brother installation, add it to your bb-bbexttab file. Many advanced scripts for montoring specific applications can be found at

    Happy monitoring!

Tools, Tips, and Tweaks Manipulating XML at the command line with xmlstarlet

In the world of open-source software, where open data formats are a necessity, XML is poised to become the de facto standard. A number of popular open-source applications already use XML as their primary data format, and many developers utilize it extensively in specialized, personal-use applications. There is a clear need for powerful and effective tools that facilitate dynamic and interactive manipulation of XML content stored in files on the local drive or acquired from remote locations.

Xmlstarlet is a versatile command-line utility that enables users to manipulate, filter, edit, search, validate, and apply stylesheets to XML content. Unfortunately, the versatility of xmlstarlet comes at the expense of usability. It is extremely unintuitive, and many users struggle with the obfuscated command line parameters and peculiar scripting idiom. There are too many features to cover here, but I would like to introduce this powerful utility and show you a few ways that you can use it to simplify some basic, everyday tasks.

For these examples, I have constructed a simple XML file that contains information about several of the astronaut monkeys launched into space by NASA. Each monkey element contains a name attribute that specifies the name of the individual monkey, a date element that contains the date of the monkey's first flight, and a species element that describes the monkey's species.

    monkeys.xml <spaceapes> <monkey name="Gordo"> <date>12/13/58</date> <species>Squirrel</species> </monkey> <monkey name="Able"> <date>5/28/59</date> <species>Rhesus</species> </monkey> <monkey name="Baker"> <date>5/28/59</date> <species>Squirrel</species> </monkey> <monkey name="Sam"> <date>12/04/59</date> <species>Rhesus</species> </monkey> </spaceapes>

The xmlstarlet command enables users to extract information from XML content with simple XPath queries. Xmlstarlet can generate plain text or filtered XML. Let's start with a simple data extraction experiment. We will use xmlstarlet to determine how many monkeys are described in the monkeys.xml file:

    $ xmlstarlet sel -t -v "count(//monkey)" monkeys.xml 4

The sel instruction tells xmlstarlet that we plan to extract or filter data. The -t parameter indicates that the following parameters are part of the output template, and the -v parameter is used to output the value of an xpath expression. In this case, our xpath expression will count all the monkey element nodes. The xpath syntax is beyond the scope of this brief introduction, and interested readers can learn the entire xpath language from this helpful tutorial at the Zvon web site.

Now we will generate a table that lists the name of each monkey as well as its species:

    $ xmlstarlet sel -t -m "//monkey" -v "species" -o " " -v "@name" -n monkeys.xml Squirrel Gordo Rhesus Able Squirrel Baker Rhesus Sam

In this example, we iterate over each monkey element in the XML file, and display the relevant data. The -m parameter tells xmlstarlet to iterate over all nodes that match the provided xpath expression, which is "//monkey" in this case. The template parameters that follow the xpath expression will be evaluated and output for each matched node. In this example, we display the species element of each monkey element, as well as the name attribute. Note that the value xpath expressions all assume that the current context is the matched node, rather than the top level of the xml document: "species" is used instead of "//monkey[x]/species" . The -o parameter tells xmlstarlet to output a text string, and it is used in this example to include a space between the two values associated with each monkey. At the end of our template, we include the -n parameter, which tells xmlstarlet to include a new line character. If we omitted the -n parameter in this example, all the data would appear on one line of text.

Xmlstarlet can also operate on remote XML content. Let's abandon our monkey example, and try to extract some content from the Ars Technica RSS feed:

$ xmlstarlet sel --net -t -m "//item" -o "Title: " -v "title" -n -o "Author: " -v "author" -n Title: Microsoft server software to go 64-bit only Author: (Jeremy Reimer) Title: Firefox 1.5 release expected soon Author: (Ryan Paul) Title: Online DVD rentals have bright future Author: (Eric Bangeman) ...

In this example, we include the --net parameter to tell xmlstarlet to download the XML content from a remote location. The example iterates over every item element in the XML document, and displays the title and author elements for each item.

Xmlstarlet can also process remote html content. If you use the --html parameter in addition to the --net parameter, you can extract data from web sites. To generate a list of image files used in a web page, simply iterate over each img element and display the src attribute:

    $ xmlstarlet sel --net --html -t -m "//img" -v "@src" -n img/xmlstarlet.png /img/libxml2-logo.png

Now let's try a more sophisticated example. As many of you know, the Open Document Format, which is utilized by OpenOffice 2 and other open source office applications, is based on XML. With a little bit of clever trickery, you can use xmlstarlet to extract content from your OpenOffice documents right at the command line. Open Document files are essentially compressed zip archives that contain all the relevant files associated with a document. The actual document text is stored in a file called content.xml within the archive. In order to use xmlstarlet to extract data from content.xml , you have to use the the unzip command to pipe the contents of content.xml into the xmlstarlet utility.

In our next example, we will list all the headings in the document and the associated heading level values, a technique that could be used to automatically generate outlines of open documents. The Open Document format uses many different XML namespaces for different kinds of content. Various text elements use the "urn:oasis:names:tc:opendocument:xmlns:text:1.0" namespace, so we will need to use that one to get the headings. Xmlstarlet allows you to establish namespace keywords with the -N parameter. In our example, we will assign the Open Document text namespace with the keyword text:

    $ unzip -p test.odt content.xml | xmlstarlet sel -N text="urn:oasis:names:tc:opendocument:xmlns:text:1.0" -t -m "//text:*[@text:outline-level]" -v "@text:outline-level" -o " " -v . -n

Our example iterates over every text element that has an outline-level attribute, and it displays the associated level value and the text of the node itself. Note that we do not tell xmlstarlet which file it should use for this operation, because we pipe in the relevant content.

As you can see, xmlstarlet is an extremely useful tool for command line XML operations. There are many other features that I have not presented here, and interested users should take a look at the documentation for additional examples.

Cool App of the Week SuperTux

I don't know about you folks, but I'm a hardcore Mario fanatic. My obsession with Super Mario World for the SNES borders on religion, I have played Mario 3 so many times that I can probably beat the first world with my eyes closed, and I have unraveled virtually every hidden feature in Mario RPG. My dreams are filled with plumbers, mushrooms, and funky flying turtle things that inexplicably pursue my destruction. For all those reasons, I have become hopelessly addicted to SuperTux, an outstanding, open source, Mario-inspired screen scroller for Linux.

SuperTux is essentially a Mario clone with unique art, original audio content, and well-designed levels. The main character is, of course, an adorable penguin that hops his way through tricky levels filled with walking bombs and evil snowballs. The current release contains all the content associated with Milestone 1, which includes 9 different enemies and 26 playable levels that feature the obligatory winter theme. Milestone 2, which is currently under active development, will add new enemies, up to 30 new levels with a forest theme, support for penguin "flapping" (doesn't that sound cute?), and internationalization support.

    SuperTux in action

I have now beaten every level in the first world, and about a third of the levels on the bonus island. Despite a few subtle bugs and the amatuer quality art, this game is highly entertaining and woefully addictive. The developers are very creative, and some of the concept art illuminates other features planned for future releases. If you are a Mario fan, or you are looking for a fun way to waste some time on your Linux system, you might want to check out SuperTux. Warning: it will decimate your productivity, so play at your own risk.

  • Rich Media and Email: Maximize Impact (and Deliverability) | real questions and Pass4sure dumps

No other marketing channel builds lifelong relationships like email. It’s a prime reason that email marketing is the preferred marketing channel for customer acquisition and customer retention (80% and 81%, respectively).

Rich media is one of email’s greatest advantages, transforming email—once plain-text messages suitable only for interdepartmental communication—into a robust marketing channel.

Yet, rich media email is a double-edged sword: Execute it correctly, and it adds visual delight. Mess up, and your email may not be delivered or convey your message.

This post walks you through each type of rich media in email and how to deploy it for maximum impact, deliverability, and accessibility.

Which types of rich media are available for email?

Rich media “includes advanced features like video, audio, or other elements that encourage viewers to interact and engage with the content.” In email, rich media includes static images, animated GIFs, videos, audio snippets, and even CSS animations.

Rich media elements can break up the monotony of text blocks, and, in certain situations, explain and persuade more effectively than words alone.

Guidelines and limitations for rich media in email

Regardless of the rich media type, there are overarching guidelines for including rich media in your emails:

Image dimensions. Emails are still designed for a 600px width, so to avoid images or GIFs getting clipped, keep them within 480–500px. (Retain the remaining area for padding.) You can create your images/videos with a width of 500px or insert them within a 500px container.

File size. All email content is downloaded from an external site when you open the email. Large file sizes slow download time and burn through mobile data.

Ideally, images and GIFs should be as small as possible. Recommendations vary, but we suggest no more than 400 KB. If you can retain image quality, smaller is better. Videos should not be longer than 1 minute (to limit potential data usage and maintain the user’s attention span).

Gmail is notorious for clipping email messages if the underlying code has a file size greater than 102 KB. Since CSS3 animations involve additional lines of code, ensure that your HTML template does not exceed the limit.

Compatibility. Modern email clients support most rich media formats. For non-compliant email clients such as Outlook (which doesn’t support GIFs, background images, or videos), you need to appropriate fallback. More on that later.

Here are six types of rich media and how to use them in emails.

    1. Static images in emails

Any form of imagery—photos, illustrations, etc.—without movement is categorized as a still image, the basic form of rich media in emails. JPG (JPEG) and PNG are two common file formats to serve static images.

JPGs have smaller file sizes but also lose some detail during compression; PNG files retain the details at the cost of a larger file size. For images that have sharp contrasts (e.g. drawings) or need to preserve embedded text, PNG is usually the better choice.

Static images are a great way to represent ideas graphically instead of using text. Instead of subscribers reading about a car design, images of the car from different angles can help them understand.

Consistency in image use can also help set your brand identity. In the email below from Craftsman, the same on-brand shade of red ties together the background, hero image, and product images:

    craftsman email

You can also add images as backgrounds for your email copy. A background image improves the visual impact and—if chosen well—highlights the headline.

In the email below from Quip, the hero image adds visualize stimulus without detracting from or competing with the headline:

    quip email

For security reasons, most email clients block images from unknown senders. Unless explicit permission is given by your subscriber to auto-download images, the email they’ll see will look like the one below:

    craftsman email images disabled

One way to manage this limitation is ALT text. Even if the image doesn’t load, the subscriber can read what the image represents; ALT text also improves accessibility for email recipients who rely on screen-readers.

email images disabled/enabled with alt text

In the above email by Rubi, the left section shows the email with images disabled and appropriate ALT txt.

Going a step further, you can create pixel art to reveal images even when image files are disabled. The trick is to slice the image in such a way that each section can be colored or stylized to create beautiful images similar to 8-bit images.

In an email by Pizza Express, the cinemagraph is sliced so that a champagne flute glass is still visible as pixel art:

pizza express pixel art in html email

Even though a picture can help visualize your message, it cannot replace your copy. Ideally, you need to maintain an 80:20 text-to-image ratio in your email layout to avoid getting flagged as SPAM. (Using a single image as the entire email content also raises the suspicion of the email being SPAM.)

Even if SPAM isn’t a consideration, using too many images could cause subscribers with image blockers to miss the message.

    2. Animated GIFs in emails

By sequentially changing frames at a pre-set duration, a phenomenon called the “Persistence of Vision,” GIFs trick the eye into seeing animation.

GIFs showcase movements and complex concepts more easily than text or static images, which can help increase conversions. Dell managed to score a 109% conversion increase by including a GIF that showed the movement of their convertible laptops:

    dell email with gif(Image source)

Moreover, since a GIF changes between frames, you can experiment with different frame durations. In the below example by Kate Spade, different frames display different colors of the same product:

    gif email for product images

In another example, by Moo Print, a static image would have sufficed, but the motion of the hand immediately draws your attention:

    Recommended for You

Webcast, March 13th: How to Activate High-Value Customers Leveraging Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning

    Sample use cases
  • Showcase variations of a product in the same space.
  • Demonstrate how your product works.
  • Create a slideshow to show multiple images.
  • Provide a 360-degree view of a product.
  • Limitations

Owing to rendering-engine limitations, Outlook and Lotus Notes do not support GIF animations—only the first frame will be displayed. This makes GIF usage for B2B emails tricky; a larger segment of your audience likely uses Outlook. Either keep vital information in the first frame or use the GIF to convey non-essential information.

The more frames in a GIF, the larger the file size. This is double whammy: You’ll increase data use for subscribers on limited data plans, and the subscriber will see only a blank box until the GIF loads.

    3. Cinemagraphs in emails

Cinemagraphs are GIFs with a twist—only one element in the background is animated, while the rest of the image is static. As this example from Netflix shows, cinemagraphs can generate a striking visual impact:

    cinemagraph in email from netflix

    Sample use cases
  • Media companies can send out email that better matches the aesthetic of the final product, like a television series or film.
  • Brands rolling out new products can add a dramatic effect.
  • Limitations

Cinemagraphs share the same limitations as other GIFs.

    4. Videos in emails

Videos maximize the amount of information you convey in limited email real estate. A short instructional video clip can convey more information than an ebook.

As elsewhere on the Internet, autoplaying videos is not an ideal user experience. (Including a click-to-play button also allows you to measure user interest in email videos.)

Adding videos to emails requires uploading your video to a third-party site (e.g. YouTube, Wistia, Vimeo, etc.) and embedding the URL in your email.

    airtable video in email

    Sample use cases
  • A short intro video in an onboarding email can help set expectations for subscribers.
  • An explainer video can demonstrate how to use a physical product.
  • Real estate agencies, tourist companies, or universities can offer virtual tours.
  • Companies can humanize their brand with messages from founders or employees.
  • Limitations

Embedded videos are an HTML5 property and supported only by a few email clients, such as Thunderbird, Apple Mail, iOS mail, and Android native (not Gmail mobile).

You need to use an animated GIF or image with a link to the video as a fallback. Layer it beneath the video frame and, using conditional coding, make it visible only to non-supporting email clients.

As with large images or GIFs, videos add to the amount of data it costs customers to engage with your email.

    5. Audio in emails

Background music sets the tone in movies; it can do the same in email—if used appropriately. (There’s a reason websites no longer autoplay music when you land on the homepage…)

In the below email, an instrumental version of the song “Closer” by The Chainsmokers plays in the background while an animated GIF is on a loop.

    audio in email example(Image source)

To help set the tone, the email below adds spooky sounds. Experience it for yourself here.

    Sample use cases
  • If you’re going all in on “tone,” audio adds another element.
  • For audio-related promotions (e.g. music events), an audio clip may make sense.
  • Limitations

Email audio is supported only in Apple Mail, iOS mail, Native Android, and Samsung Mail. While this may not be a major concern—the email visuals would still render—subscribers may not notice the audio unless you specify its existence.

Audio clips add file size to the email, though a small audio clip played on a loop or hosted on a third-party platform can reduce the download time.

    6. CSS animation in emails

With the help of JavaScript and (less and less often) Flash, websites have visually impressive animations and transitions to capture attention. Email clients don’t support JavaScript or Flash due to security reasons.

Yet with the adoption of CSS3 animations, email developers can replicate certain web-based interactivity into email:

Keyframe animations are possible thanks to CSS. Keyframe animations transform and move email elements based on a keyframe, inducing an illusion of an animated element:

    css3 email for interactive game

In the above email by Penguin Random House, the bus remains fixed while the background scrolls, giving an illusion of the bus moving across a fixed road. (Image source)

    email game with css3

The above email, titled “Super Mail Quest,” is an entire game within the email: The scenes change based on user choices. (You can try your luck here.)

interactive coupon code email with css

The above email replicates a bike lock, revealing a coupon code when a user sets the correct combination. (Image source)

    Sample use cases Limitations

Email clients are gradually supporting CSS3, but only a handful fully support all CSS3 effects. This is manageable as long as you provide an appropriate fallback for the non-supporting email clients. Adding a “View Online” link can ensure that everyone gets a (near) uniform experience when interacting with your email.

The table below lists email clients and the interactivity they support:

features supported in email by email client

css animations supported by email client(Image source)

Personalization: The next level in rich media email

A survey of more than 7,000 consumers by Salesforce found that consumers are increasingly comfortable with personalization:

  • 57% of consumers are willing to share personal data in exchange for personalized offers or discounts;
  • 52% would share personal data in exchange for product recommendations;
  • 53% would do the same for personalized shopping experiences.
  • Yet while 58% of email marketers already use some form of personalization, few go beyond merge tags. In addition to personalizing email copy, personalized images can help strengthen the perception of tailored messaging:

    lucozade personalization in HTML email

In the above email by Lucozade, the hero image is personalized to include the name of the recipient.

Rich media in emails are an integral part of a visually attractive email. All rich media come with some costs—slightly longer load times, more data usage. But proper deployment can keep emails on brand, increase user engagement, and help differentiate your campaigns in a crowded inbox.

Some of the most advanced features—like embedded videos and CSS3 animations—still require appropriate fallbacks, but email client support will only grow.
